Recommendations on the Future of the Engineering Doctorate

10. April 2012

Due to continuing discussions about structure and objectives of doctorates in Europe, acatech published an updated and translated summary of its recommendations on the future of the engineering doctorate at German universities. These recommendations base on a project in 2008, including a surveys of professors and doctoral degree holders as well as international comparisons of particular features of the engineering doctorate. According to the results, the overall picture of the process and outcomes of the engineering doctorate in Germany is very satisfactory. Universities train highly-skilled academic professionals in the engineering disciplines and prepare them for research and leadership roles in science and industry. The project also highlighted chances to maintain and reinforce the high quality of this qualification in Germany, e. g. an improved supervision and a more systematic acquisition of non-subject-specific skills during the doctoral phase. The English summary contains parts of the survey results as well as the recommendations and concrete approaches.
