Future Energy Grid. Migration to the Internet of Energy

21. Oktober 2012

Germany wants to opt out of nuclear energy by 2022 and rapidly switch to energy supply based on renewable energies such as wind and solar power. These renewable energies can only be integrated into the electricity system on a large scale, if the grid infrastructure and storage capacities are upgraded. Information communication technology (ICT) is essential for the future power supply. Energy technology and ICT merge together in a so-called "smart grid" and contribute to the efficient use of Germany's energy resources.

The study describes ICT's contribution towards the evolution of a new, intelligent energy system, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with this. Three very different scenarios are considered, which as a whole show a possible development corridor until 2030.
