STAC Report "The Future of Europe is Science", 2014

Foresight Workshop '2030' Science, Engineering, Technology & Innovation: What's in it for Society?

Brussels, 2014

Euro-CASE, the European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering, nominated eight experts for the two-day workshop “2030 Science and Technology Foresight - what's in it for society". The results of the workshop contributed to the work of EU Commission President Barros’s Science & Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) and “The Future of Europe is Science" conference in Lisbon in October 2014 organised by the European Commission.

Foresight processes explore scientific and technological developments from different perspectives. They aim to identify future trends thus allowing to provide support for political decision making. Foresight processes serve as a pool of ideas for future policy strategies of the European Commission.

Headed by Anne Glover, Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) organised the workshop “2030 Science and Technology Foresight - what's in it for society?”. The participating scientists and representatives of the European Commission discussed future developments and breakthroughs in the fields of science, technology and engineering with a view to the year 2030.

Topics such as „How will we access and use resources?”, „How will we interact?” and „How healthy will we be?” were at the core of the workshop. The participants also discussed the societal impacts of possible developments in these fields and posed the question of the actions that would currently need to be taken at EU level in order to seize the opportunities created by these developments and to manage potential risks.

Euro-CASE nominated eight experts for the workshop who together with members of the European Commission presented new developments in the above mentioned fields. Members of the EU Commission President Barros’s Science & Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) were also among the participants.

The results of the workshop contributed to the STAC report "The Future of Europe is Science". The report outlines some key opportunities for Europe that could be provided by science and technology, looking ahead to the year 2030.

In addition, the workshop results were also a component of the EU foresight conference of the same title in Lisbon on October 6 and 7 under the auspices of European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Bringing together actors from the world of science, industry and society, the two-day conference aimed to take stock of European achievements in science over the past 10 years and to look ahead to the year 2030. The conference also served to provide the new European Commission with impulses to identify and prioritise new policy fields.
