Research in medical engineering in Germany is comprehensive, diverse and interdisciplinary. For experts in the fields of hospital care, technical and scientific research or industry, it is almost impossible to obtain an overview of which topics are new or have already been worked on elsewhere, who is an expert for what topic and which are the right partners for a given research project.

acatech has therefore, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), developed an Internet-based database of all research projects in medical engineering, which can be accessed using search terms relating to research topics. The "MedTech projects" database is continuously updated and expanded by the project leaders via the Internet. To be able to include virtually all research projects in the database, it is supported by the relevant project sponsors of the BMBF and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The database was introduced on 15 November 2006 at the MEDICA in Düsseldorf and has been online ever since. All information for project leaders and other users can be found on the database website.
