Development of a comprehensive strategy for the promotion of young scientists and engineers and the preparation of implementation-oriented measures

 

The current lack of young scientists and engineers in many technical occupations can be attributed to a variety of complex causes. The objective of this acatech project is to execute a wide-scale study of the causes of this trend and to develop a comprehensive strategy for the targeted support of young scientists and engineers. To this end, acatech launched the "Platform for promoting young scientists and engineers", in which acatech members work closely with reputable social scientists.

 

The experts of the "Platform" will initially investigate the problem areas considered to be urgent and the research requirements in different topical fields. Special attention will be paid to the various stations of a person's life and to the institutions that play a central role in developing an interest in science and skills in this area (such as schools and universities).

 

On the basis of the current level of expertise and in cooperation with the "Platform" experts, acatech plans to identify measures for implementation and to work out recommendations for action. The resulting overall strategy will be introduced to the public and discussed at a "Career summit" in the spring of 2009. Finally, acatech intends to advance the implementation of its recommendations by players in politics, science and industry.
