Development of a comprehensive strategy for the promotion of young scientists and engineers and the preparation of implementation-oriented measures

Development of a comprehensive strategy to encourage young scientists and engineers and to prepare implementation-oriented measures.

The current lack of young scientists and engineers in many technical occupations can be attributed to a variety of complex causes. The objective of this acatech project was to execute a wide-scale study of the causes of this trend and to develop a comprehensive strategy to provide targeted support to young scientists and engineers. To this end, acatech launched the "Platform for promoting young scientists and engineers", in which acatech members worked closely with reputable social scientists.

The experts of the Platform initially investigated the urgent problem areas and the research requirements in different topical fields. Special attention was paid to the various life stages and to the institutions that play a central role in developing an interest in science and skills in this area (such as schools and universities).

On the basis of the current level of expertise, and in cooperation with the Platform experts, acatech identified measures for implementation and to develop recommendations for action. The resulting overall strategy was introduced to the public and discussed at a Career Summit in spring 2009. Finally, acatech intends to advance the implementation of its recommendations by players in politics, science and industry.

Continuation of the next generation platform (phase II)

Following the end of the concept phase (phase I), the next generation platform will continue under the new leadership of Prof. Dr. Ortwin Renn (University of Stuttgart and member of the acatech Executive Board) and with the new administration of the acatech office. During phase II, the aforementioned research and action areas (primary and secondary socialisation, university and labour market/equal opportunities) will be investigated in further detail by the development of additional projects.
