Executive Summary and Recommendations of the acatech POSITION Paper: Industrie 4.0, Urban Development and German International Development Cooperations

Industrie 4.0 Global

Project status:

finalised

Project period:

07/2015 to 11/2016

Background and Goals

Industrie 4.0 describes the transformation of “classic” industries by the Internet of things, data and services. Such real time integration of products, processes, and infrastructure marks the start of a fourth industrial revolution: supply, production, maintenance, delivery, and customer service are increasingly interconnected through the Internet. Rigid value chains turn into highly flexible value networks.

With a successful production sector, a strong demand for software solutions and know-how of key technologies, Germany could become a leading market for and supplier of Industrie 4.0 solutions. A set of international norms and standards for Industrie 4.0 is, however, prerequisite for such success. This project aims to identify areas for cooperation with international partners to realize synergies and competitive advantages. The project team will conduct expert surveys in Germany, Great Britain, China, Japan, South Korea, and the USA.
