The Laboratory within Engineering Education

Project status:

Project period:

07/2012 to 03/2016

The project addresses application- and competence-oriented laboratory activities in engineering education. Improving such activities will contribute to the optimal education of future engineers.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the project team comprises engineers and higher education didactics while also applying research methods from social/cultural science and higher education didactics.

The first step will analyse the current status of research as well as laboratory tasks. Following that, an index of criteria will be constructed, which helps to classify and assess laboratory tasks in respect to their effectiveness for learning for future occupational areas inside or outside university. Based upon this and by means of further empirical analyses, a dynamic database including best-practice-examples, a white paper for teaching laboratory and a continuing education offering for laboratory teachers will be developed.

Target group

The results of the projects will be directed towards higher education teachers in technical subjects. They shall be provided with a summary of the already existing, established and ideal laboratory experiments as well as with recommendations for the development of modern laboratory training.

The educational laboratory for engineering is a traditional tool and powerful format within academic education for engineering. Laboratory education is especially necessary in production engineering, in order to allow students of differing experience levels to gain and deepen their engineering knowledge, practical skills, and area-specific competencies through exemplary research.
