acatech sees itself as a working academy with flexible organisational structures. Each member belongs to at least one of the currently eleven topical networks. These networks cover a wide range of subjects related to specific branches of engineering. In addition, some of the topical networks are also dealing with interdisciplinary work involving aspects of the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The members of these networks join forces with outside experts to form interdisciplinary project groups devoted to topical issues of relevance to the future. acatech also participates in a variety of collaborative projects with other academies of science, confirming its integration on an institutional level and with the scientific community.
