In summer 2009, this topical network merged with the Materials Innovation Committee that was launched in 2005 by Ekkehard Schulz (Chairman of the Executive Board at ThyssenKrupp AG) as part of the "Partners for Innovation" initiative of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. The fusion of the topical network with the committee bundles energies to initiate new projects in this field and offers politicians an independent and expert point of contact.
